Sometimes a soft cover journal is a better choice. It's lighter if you're travelling and sometimes it's preferable to be able to bend the pages over. It's easier for writing in a more confined space. I also use soft cover journals for more casual note-taking - especially if I'm doing a course and want to take notes. That way I can keep that notebook just for that one purpose.
